Police are actively searching for a suspect who opened fire at officers following a traffic stop on Tuesday afternoon.

Suspect Fires at Officers After Pursuit
According to authorities, officers attempted to stop a vehicle near U.S. 31 and 196th Street, but the driver refused to comply, leading to a brief pursuit. The vehicle eventually crashed, after which the suspect exited and fired multiple shots at officers before fleeing on foot.
“No officers were injured in the incident,” police confirmed. “The suspect is considered armed and dangerous.”
Residents Urged to Shelter in Place
Police are urging residents between 191st Street to 196th Street and U.S. 31 to Flippins Road to lock their doors and stay inside as the search continues.
The suspect is described as a Black man with dreadlocks, wearing a dark blue or black hoodie or sweatshirt.
Helicopter Assists in Ongoing Search
A perimeter has been formed in the area, and Indiana State Police have deployed a helicopter to assist in the search. Public flight data shows it circling near the intersection of East 191st Street and U.S. 31.
“The situation remains an active investigation,” said the Westfield Police Department.
