Former US President Donald Trump on Monday launched a blistering attack on Representative Ilhan Omar (D-Minnesota) over her remarks about conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was killed last week in Utah.
“I think she’s a disgraceful person. A loser,” Trump said when asked if Omar should be removed from her congressional committees. “It’s amazing the way people vote… It’s hard to believe. But I think she’s a disgusting person.”
Resolution to Remove Omar From Committees
Following Trump’s comments, Representative Buddy Carter (R-Georgia) introduced a resolution to strip Ilhan Omar of her positions on the House Budget Committee and the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, where she currently serves as the top Democrat on the Subcommittee on Workforce Protections.
Republicans argue Omar’s remarks about Kirk justify her removal, while Democrats say her comments have been taken out of context.
Omar’s Remarks on Charlie Kirk
Omar’s controversy began after an interview with the progressive outlet Zeteo, where she recalled Kirk’s past statements.
She claimed Kirk had “downplayed slavery and what Black people have gone through in this country by saying Juneteenth shouldn’t exist.”
“There are a lot of people who are out there talking about him just wanting to have a civil debate,” she said. “There is nothing more effed up, you know, like, than to completely pretend that, you know, his words and actions have not been recorded and in existence for the last decade or so.”
Despite her criticism, Omar also expressed sympathy for Kirk’s family. “Like, I have empathy for his kids and his wife and what they’re going through,” she said.
Omar Responds to Backlash
Amid the political storm, Omar clarified her stance on X (Twitter):
She wrote that while she had “disagreed with Charlie Kirk vehemently about his rhetoric,” her “heart breaks for his wife and children.”
She added: “I don’t wish violence on anyone. My faith teaches me the power of peace, empathy, and compassion. Right-wing accounts trying to spin a false story when I condemned his murder multiple times is fitting for their agenda to villainize the left to hide from the fact that Donald Trump gins up hate on a daily basis.”
Republicans Double Down
Carter, who is also running for the US Senate, issued a strong statement against Omar:
“Disparaging Charlie Kirk’s legacy, a God-fearing, honorable man, for boldly sharing his conservative beliefs is disgusting,” he told Fox News. “The radical left has normalized meeting free speech with violence, and it must stop. No one who justifies the assassination of someone with different political views than them deserves to sit on a committee.”
He added: “Committees are for serious lawmakers, not hate-spewing politicians.”
Political Fallout Continues
The death of Charlie Kirk and the ensuing political fight has further deepened partisan tensions in Washington. Ilhan Omar continues to face sharp criticism from Republicans, while Democrats argue her words have been misrepresented for political gain.
