TikTok is expanding beyond short videos by adding voice notes to its messaging platform. Users can now record and send short audio messages in direct messages (DMs), along with photos and videos.
TikTok confirmed the update to TechCrunch, marking a major upgrade for the app’s messaging system.
Why Voice Notes Are Trending
According to PC Mag, voice notes are highly popular among Gen Z, with around 84% using them regularly. Younger users appreciate them for creating stronger emotional connections and explaining ideas more clearly than text.
What’s New in TikTok Messaging?
TikTok users can now:
- Send voice notes in one-on-one or group chats
- Share up to nine images or videos in a single DM
- Record videos or voice notes up to one minute long
- Edit photos and videos directly in the message before sending
These features are being gradually rolled out worldwide over the next few weeks, according to a TikTok spokesperson.
Enhanced Safety Features
TikTok also introduced new safety protections:
- Users under 16 cannot send DMs at all
- For ages 16-18, images with nudity are automatically blocked
- Adults 18+ can enable this filter voluntarily
- First messages cannot be self-recorded voice notes or videos—they must be pre-existing TikTok content
These changes aim to make messaging safer and more controlled, especially for younger users.
Impact on TikTok Users
The messaging upgrades bring TikTok closer to rivals like WhatsApp and Instagram, offering richer communication tools while maintaining safety. Voice notes allow for more personal and expressive conversations, enhancing user engagement.
