OnePlus Releases Inaugural Foldable Device ‘OnePlus Open’

Share

On October 19, 2023, OnePlus launched its first foldable device, the OnePlus Open, at a Mumbai event. According to the company, the name “Open” highlights both the foldable’s form factor and the company’s commitment to openness. OnePlus President and COO Kinder Liu refers to the OnePlus Open as the “dream smartphone” ahead of its introduction.

The Chinese technology company’s first foldable packs a punch, with a folding design, ProXDR displays, and multi-spatial speakers. The smartphone includes a camera setup led by Sony’s LYTIA “Pixel Stacked” sensor.

Design Of The OnePlus Open

The design of the OnePlus Open is described by the company that makes it as “industrial minimalism combined with sophisticated elegance.” The phone is available in two color options: Emerald Dusk (green) and Voyager Black.

A light-reflective CD-pattern dial houses camera sensors. The OnePlus Open weighs 239 grams and has a thickness of 5.8 mm when unfolded and 11.7 mm when folded. According to the manufacturer, the device weighs the same as the iPhone 14 Pro Max (240 grams).

According to OnePlus, the “Flexion Hinge” on the OnePlus Open is made on a single-spine architecture, distinguishing it from the three-part spine seen on most foldables. OnePlus used 69 parts for the hinge rather than the standard 100+, which the company claims makes it lighter.

The Ceramic Guard on the cover display of the OnePlus Open is 20% tougher than Victus, according to the company. The smartphone’s main display includes three layers of protection: an Ultra-Thin Glass layer, a TPU layer to defend against impact, and an anti-reflection screen protector.

The OnePlus Open’s camera uses Sony’s latest LYTIA “Pixel Stacked” image sensor (LYT-T808). The 1/1.43-inch “Pixel Stacked” CMOS sensor offers image quality on par with the 1-inch Sony IMX989 sensor.

The smartphone is made of a unique cobalt molybdenum alloy and titanium alloy. OnePlus used a zirconium-based amorphous alloy for the hinge. The OnePlus Open also includes the company’s trademark Alert Slider.

Camera Setup In OnePlus Open

The OnePlus Open is equipped with three cameras: a 48MP Sony LYTIA-T808 “Pixel Stacked” Main Camera with OIS, a 64MP Telephoto Camera with OIS 3X optical, 6X in-sensor zoom, and up to 120X Ultra Res zoom, and a 48MP Ultra-Wide Camera.

The OnePlus Open has a 20 MP front camera on the main screen and a 32 MP camera on the cover screen for selfies, with the cover screen being a superior choice for front-facing activities.

The smartphone’s primary back camera introduces “Pixel Stacked” technology, also known as “Dual-Layer Transistor Pixel” technology. According to the company, this design allows the lens to make better use of space and let in more light, increasing the device’s dynamic range.
