Visuals posted to social media showed a heavy police presence as officers locked down the area and began evacuating shoppers. Some witnesses told local media they were sheltering in place during the chaos.

What Happened During the Oglethorpe Mall Shooting?

The Oglethorpe Mall shooting was first reported around 8 PM on Wednesday at the mall located at 7804 Abercorn Street, one of Savannah’s busiest retail hubs. Authorities confirmed that multiple individuals sustained injuries, though the number and severity remain unconfirmed as of now.

Witnesses reported hearing gunfire inside the mall, followed by scenes of panic as shoppers fled or hid inside stores. Videos posted on X (formerly Twitter) captured large crowds running and police arriving at the scene with weapons drawn.

Shooter Still Unknown

As of the latest update, no suspect has been identified, and it is unclear whether the shooter is still at large or has been apprehended. The SPD has not released information about a possible motive, nor have they confirmed whether the shooting was targeted or random.

In a statement, IAFF Savannah Firefighters warned of an “active and dangerous situation” at the mall and advised residents to avoid the area.

Oglethorpe Mall Locked Down

Oglethorpe Mall, home to over 60 stores, had no prior history of shootings before this incident. In response to the emergency, officers secured the building, began clearing each store, and guided shoppers out safely. An active shooter alert was issued for the surrounding area.
