Brake Issue and Switch Problem Cause Major NYC Subway Disruptions; Multiple Lines Affected.

New York City commuters faced major subway disruptions during Wednesday’s evening rush hour, according to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). The chaos was triggered by two separate incidents:

  • A train brake activation near West 4th Street–Washington Square, disrupting the B, D, F, and M lines
  • A switch malfunction near Prince Street, affecting the N, Q, R, and W lines

Current NYC Subway Service Changes

The MTA has announced the following service adjustments as crews work to resolve the issues:

  • B trains: Suspended in both directions
  • D trains: Running with delays in both directions
  • F trains: Some downtown trains rerouted via the E line from Jackson Heights–Roosevelt Ave to Court Square–23rd Street, then via the G line to Bergen Street
  • M trains: Experiencing delays in both directions
  • N and Q trains: Some downtown trains running via the R line from 34th Street–Herald Square to DeKalb Avenue
  • W trains: Delayed in both directions

Commuters Urged to Check Updates

The MTA strongly advises riders to check the official MTA website or transit app for real-time updates and alternate routes as disruptions continue into the evening commute.

“These ongoing disruptions are causing significant congestion and confusion across the system,” MTA officials said.
