Shannon Godbout Linked to Crash Killing Rory MacLeod

A 41-year-old Rhode Island woman, Shannon Godbout, has been arrested after a fatal crash in Hopkinton that killed Grammy-nominated musician Roderick “Rory” MacLeod on Saturday. Police said Godbout struck MacLeod while he was walking his dogs along Spring Street.

The 70-year-old Hopkinton resident suffered severe injuries and was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

Rory MacLeod: Celebrated Musician and Educator

MacLeod was best known as a bassist for Roomful of Blues during the 1980s, the era when the band earned one of its Grammy nominations. In 2014, he was inducted into the Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame.

In later years, he worked as a music educator, teaching at Brown University alongside his wife, musician and educator Sandol Astrausky.

Who Is Shannon Godbout?

Police have identified Shannon Godbout as a Rhode Island resident with a lengthy criminal record that includes at least 84 court warrants and 40 traffic citations. Initial reports also noted she has 100+ prior arrest records.

Godbout was arrested at the scene of the crash.

Officers searching her vehicle reported finding drugs and drug distribution materials, leading to multiple narcotics-related charges in addition to charges for endangering the life of a pedestrian.

Hopkinton Police said additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues.

Crash Details: Vehicle Mounted Sidewalk Before Impact

According to investigators, Godbout was driving eastbound on Spring Street on Saturday afternoon when she changed lanes, veered onto the sidewalk, and struck two telephone poles before hitting MacLeod, who was walking his dogs on the pavement.

Police say the crash appears to be isolated, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Who Was Roderick “Rory” MacLeod?

Roderick “Rory” MacLeod was a respected bassist known for his work with Roomful of Blues, a band recognized for its energetic blend of jump blues, swing, R&B, and soul. Formed in 1967, the group gained national acclaim, including a Grammy nomination during MacLeod’s time with them.

Beyond performing, MacLeod contributed significantly to music education, teaching at Brown University with his wife, Sandol Astrausky.
