SantaCon 2025 is set to return to New York City, bringing thousands of participants dressed as Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus, elves and festive characters to Manhattan for the city’s most spirited—and often chaotic—holiday bar crawl.
The all-day event begins at 10 a.m., with celebrations moving through Midtown and the East Village, where more than 50 bars and clubs are participating.
What Is SantaCon 2025?
SantaCon is a long-running December tradition in New York City, widely recognized for its costumes, boisterous crowds and holiday-themed revelry. Organizers describe the event as a charitable, non-political gathering designed to spread festive cheer. Participants are encouraged to donate $15 for entry into participating venues.
Where SantaCon 2025 Will Take Place
The event will kick off near West 39th Street and Broadway in Midtown Manhattan. From there, the red-and-white sea of Santas will make its way south, stopping at dozens of bars throughout:
- Midtown West
- Midtown East
- The East Village
Celebrations are expected to continue into the evening, with crowds becoming denser as the day progresses.
Weather and Safety Preparations
Temperatures on event day are expected to hover around 40 degrees Celsius. While it will be cold, conditions should remain manageable. Organizers recommend wearing insulated layers beneath costumes to stay warm throughout the crawl.
SantaCon Rules: What Participants Must Follow
Organizers have emphasized the Santa Code, a list of rules designed to maintain order and ensure safety:
- Tip bartenders and staff
- Clean up after yourself
- Respect police officers
- Stay mindful around children
- Avoid excessive drinking
- No fighting, littering or public urination
- Do not climb on cars or damage property
According to a New York Post report, SantaCon has faced criticism in previous years for disorderly conduct and public disturbances. Organizers reiterated that the event is meant to promote peace and fun, encouraging participants to walk away from conflicts rather than escalate them.
In past years, the MTA temporarily banned alcohol on Metro-North and LIRR during SantaCon weekend, though no such ban has been announced yet for 2025.
Organizers also stress the importance of wearing full costumes, not just Santa hats, and suggest bringing cash since many bars are expected to have long lines.
Areas to Avoid During SantaCon 2025
Those hoping to steer clear of the SantaCon crowds should avoid Midtown and the East Village, where activity will be most concentrated. Quieter alternatives include:
- Upper West Side
- Harlem
- Northern and southern ends of Manhattan
SantaCon 2025 is expected to be one of the largest holiday gatherings in NYC this year, drawing both excited participants and wary locals as the festivities unfold across Manhattan.
