ONEOK Fire: Explosion Rocks Mont Belvieu Plant

Mont Belvieu firefighters were dispatched Monday morning to a fire and explosion at the ONEOK MBC Maintenance facility on SH 146 near SH 99 in Chambers County, northeast of Houston.

The blast, which occurred around 11 a.m., sent thick plumes of smoke visible for miles, according to AIR 11 footage. Residents reported feeling the force of the explosion, though city officials confirmed no immediate danger to the public.

Three workers were injured in the incident, all sustaining non-life-threatening injuries. “All other employees have been accounted for,” a city spokesman told reporters, reassuring both residents and workers. Emergency crews responded quickly, containing the fire and preventing further escalation.

Emergency Response and Safety Measures

Firefighters brought the blaze under control swiftly, with the Mont Belvieu Fire Department coordinating closely with city authorities to secure the area. The explosion was audible across the city, but officials confirmed that nearby roads remained open and no evacuation orders were issued.

“We are actively monitoring the situation and assisting with medical evaluations of the injured,” the city statement read, emphasizing ongoing safety precautions.

The company is assessing the damage and working with local authorities to ensure safety. This facility is a key part of ONEOK’s Texas network supplying domestic and international energy markets.

Community Reaction and Ongoing Monitoring

Residents expressed concern after seeing the explosion and smoke. “I didn’t hear the blast, but my house shook,” one local told reporters. While the fire caused visible damage, authorities reported no broader threat to the public. ONEOK has not yet disclosed the cause of the explosion, though preliminary assessments are underway.

City and emergency officials continue to monitor air quality and plant safety. Updates are expected as more information becomes available. Mont Belvieu officials praised the quick response that helped prevent further injuries or damage.
