Brown University Shooting: Police Release New Images

Providence police on Wednesday released new, enhanced images connected to the Brown University shooting as investigators continue searching for the attacker. The shooting occurred Saturday inside a campus engineering building, killing two students and injuring nine others.

More than 72 hours later, authorities have not identified the shooter and are urging the public to share any information that could help move the investigation forward. Police said the images were released to show the person of interest more clearly and to help trace movements before the attack.

What Police Said

Police shared the enhanced photos on X and said investigators want to identify and speak with the person shown in the images. Authorities noted the individual was near the person of interest around the time of the shooting.

Officials urged anyone with information to contact the tip line, stressing that even small details could be significant.

What Investigators Know So Far

Authorities have released only a limited description of the person of interest, describing the individual as stocky and about 5 feet 8 inches tall. In all released footage, the person’s face appears covered or turned away.

Surveillance video shows a person wearing dark clothing walking through nearby streets for nearly an hour after 2 p.m., within a few blocks of the Brown University engineering building where the shooting occurred.

Video Timeline and FBI Involvement

FBI official Kash Patel released a video timeline Tuesday tracking the movements of the person of interest. The clips show the individual walking along sidewalks and residential streets close to campus.

Patel said the FBI is working closely with Providence Police and Rhode Island State Police. Authorities are offering a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to the identification, arrest, and conviction of the person responsible.

Police said they have received about 200 tips since the shooting and continue to ask residents to review home security cameras, doorbell footage, and other recordings from Saturday afternoon.

Search Efforts and Caution Against Speculation

Investigators are searching homes, yards, and dumpsters in nearby neighborhoods for physical evidence that could connect someone to the crime.

Earlier, police detained a person of interest but later released that individual. Authorities emphasized that the release did not end the investigation and that no motive has been announced.

Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha said the investigation is moving forward steadily and warned against speculation, noting that linking the attack to ethnicity, politics, or culture without facts is dangerous.

University Response and Emergency Alerts

Brown University President Christina Paxson addressed questions about why emergency sirens did not sound during the shooting. She said the siren system is not effective during active shooter situations and could cause panic or draw people toward danger.

Paxson said the university relies on text and email alerts for indoor threats. According to officials, alerts were sent to about 20,000 people within minutes, with the first email issued at 4:22 p.m., shortly after shots were fired around 4:05 p.m.
