University cites serious professional misconduct.

Ohio University has dismissed head football coach Brian Smith for cause, citing “serious professional misconduct and participating in activities that reflect unfavorably on the University.”

In a statement released Wednesday, the university said the decision followed an administrative review. Officials did not provide further details about the findings that led to Smith’s dismissal.

Decision Follows Administrative Review

Ohio University said the move came after a formal internal process but stopped short of elaborating on the nature of the misconduct. The university has not indicated whether additional information will be released.

Smith had been placed on indefinite leave on December 1, though the university did not publicly explain the reason at the time.

Brian Smith’s Tenure at Ohio University

Smith, 45, was nearing the end of his first full season as head coach after being appointed on a permanent basis for the 2025 season. He previously served as interim head coach last year following the departure of Tim Albin.

During his interim tenure, Smith led the Bobcats to a Cure Bowl victory, strengthening his case for the permanent role.

Season Results and Bowl Game Impact

Ohio finished the regular season with an 8–4 record under Smith, earning a bowl matchup against UNLV scheduled for December 23. Smith will not coach the team in that game.

Defensive coordinator John Hauser was named interim head coach after Smith was placed on leave and will continue in that role.

Coaching Background and Next Steps

Before joining Ohio University, Smith held multiple assistant and coordinator roles across college football programs. He had three separate stints at Hawaii and worked primarily as an offensive coordinator or offensive position coach prior to his first head coaching opportunity.

In its statement, Ohio University confirmed that a search for a new head football coach will begin immediately.
