A blizzard warning has been issued for Minnesota as a powerful winter storm is forecast to move across the state beginning Sunday and lasting into Monday, according to the National Weather Service.
Blizzard Conditions Expected Across Minnesota
Forecasters warn the system will bring strong winds, falling temperatures, and dangerous travel conditions, with the highest risk of blizzard conditions along the western stretch of Interstate 90.
Meteorologists said blowing snow and reduced visibility could make travel extremely hazardous, particularly in open and rural areas.
Snowfall Forecast and Timing
Heavier snow bands, with accumulations of up to six inches, are expected across eastern Minnesota and neighboring parts of western Wisconsin.
A mix of rain and freezing precipitation will begin around midnight Saturday in areas including Alexandria and Madison, before spreading to Little Falls and St. Cloud.
In the Twin Cities, rain is expected overnight before changing to snow around 8:00 a.m. Sunday, with the heaviest snowfall forecast near 1:00 p.m.
Cities expected to see heavier snow early Sunday afternoon include Mankato and Red Wing in Minnesota, along with St. Croix Falls and Eau Claire in western Wisconsin.
Winds and Travel Risks
Strong winds combined with falling snow could lead to whiteout conditions, particularly in western and southern parts of the state. Officials warned that road conditions may deteriorate rapidly as temperatures drop.
Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel, monitor forecasts closely, and prepare emergency kits if travel is unavoidable.
When Will the Storm End?
National Weather Service meteorologist Ryan Dunleavy said the storm will be “pretty expansive” but is expected to clear by Monday morning, allowing conditions to gradually improve.
