Tsunami Warning Update: Hawaii Orders Vessels to Leave Ports

A powerful 8.7 magnitude earthquake struck off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on Wednesday morning, triggering tsunami warnings for the coasts of Hawaii, the United States, and Japan.

Immediate Response from Hawaii’s Authorities

A post on X by Hawaii’s Department of Transportation states that the Coast Guard has instructed all vessels across every island to leave port due to the tsunami threat. “Due to a massive earthquake that occurred in the Pacific Ocean, a Tsunami Warning is in effect for those living in Hawaii,” U.S. President Donald Trump emphasized in a message on X. “A Tsunami Watch is in effect for Alaska and the Pacific Coast of the United States.”

Expected Timeline for Tsunami Waves

The initial tsunami waves are anticipated to reach Hawaii around 7 PM local time, approximately two and a half hours from now. The National Weather Service has cautioned residents to prepare for potential impacts.

Evacuations in Japan

Workers at Japan’s damaged Fukushima nuclear plant were evacuated following the earthquake. “We have evacuated all workers and employees,” confirmed a spokeswoman for plant operator TEPCO, adding that “no abnormality” has been observed at the site.

In Russia, the earthquake triggered tsunami waves measuring between 3 to 4 meters (10 to 13 feet). Sergei Lebedev, the regional minister for emergency situations, urged residents to “move away from the shoreline of the peninsula.”

Warnings for New Zealand and Other Regions

New Zealand’s National Emergency Management Agency has warned of powerful and erratic sea currents and shoreline surges in the aftermath of the earthquake. “Those in or around the sea—including beaches, shorelines, harbors, marinas, rivers, and estuaries—should leave the water and stay clear of the area,” they advised.

International Coordination and Preparedness

The Japanese government has established a task force to collect information and coordinate a response in the event of a crisis. Tsunami effects are expected to reach New Zealand around midnight local time.
