Coldplay’s Chris Martin Sparks Outrage Over Israel–Palestine Comments

Coldplay frontman Chris Martin caused a stir during the band’s Wembley Stadium concert on Sunday. He invited two young Israeli fans on stage, thanking them for coming and telling them they are “equal humans on Earth” alongside Palestinians. Clips of the moment went viral, drawing both cheers and boos from the crowd.

While sitting at his piano, Martin said, “Although it’s controversial, maybe, I also want to welcome people in the audience from Palestine,” which received applause. Some fans praised his inclusivity, but others felt he embarrassed the Israeli fans and politicized the show.

Jewish Community Voices Outrage

Journalist Eve Barlow said she “cannot even begin to unpack how mortifying that moment must have been” for the fans, arguing that Martin turned a celebration into a public test of their identity.

Research fellow Casey Babb said the singer turned “a night of celebration, awe, and excitement” into “an evening of humiliation, confusion, and sadness,” accusing him of lacking understanding of the issues he spoke about.

Loyal Fans Share Their Hurt

This is the second time Coldplay has grabbed headlines during their Music of the Spheres tour. Earlier in July, a separate concert in Massachusetts went viral after a kiss cam incident led to a CEO’s resignation.

Controversial Stage Gesture

During the Wembley concert, two Israeli girls were reportedly booed for saying they were from Israel. Instead of defending them, Chris Martin addressed Palestinian audience members and told the girls, “we are treating you as humans of this earth.”

Some fans criticized the move, saying Coldplay invited the women on stage only to make them feel bad for being Israeli, sparking debate about whether Martin’s gesture was inclusive or insensitive.
