Google Gemini Advanced Users Can Now Connect the Chatbot

Gemini, Google’s artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot, will now have a new capability. Gemini now supports connecting to GitHub projects and doing a variety of coding tasks, as announced on Wednesday. These include creating and updating functions, explaining code, addressing queries about the codebase, troubleshooting code, and so on. Currently, the feature is exclusively available to the platform’s premium subscribers.

Notably, the Mountain View-based tech giant revealed that Gemini would now be extended to more devices, including smartwatches, smart TVs, car infotainment systems, and more.

The new functionality was introduced via a post on X (previously Twitter) by the Gemini app’s official handle. The original text read: “Gemini Advanced now connects with GitHub, making it a more powerful coding assistant.” The new feature should be available to users of the most recent versions of the mobile app or online client. Notably, this feature is only available to Gemini Advanced subscribers.

While the functionality does not improve the chatbot’s coding capabilities, it does make its use case more customized. Users may now connect the AI to their repositories and ask Gemini questions about them, or ask it to debug the codebase.

According to Google, this new functionality will enable Gemini to produce and edit code and functions, analyze and explain code, respond to questions, debug, and perform other tasks. For example, Gemini was able to analyze the code and provide ways to improve its efficiency.

To use the functionality, Gemini Advanced users should hit the addition (+) icon on the left side of the text field and select the “import code” option. Once completed, users will see another text box where they can paste the GitHub URL. These connections might be from public or private repositories; the AI works with both.
