According to a report, Google provided additional information on Android 15 during its developer-focused sessions at I/O 2024. One such detail was about the company’s efforts to increase the battery life of the devices, notably the standby battery life.

According to reports, the tech giant has altered the Android system’s Doze mode to ensure that background apps do not continue to run when the smartphone is not in use. This update is believed to boost Android smartphones’ standby battery life by up to three hours.

Mishaal Rahman, writing for Android Authority, stated in a post that he asked Dave Burke, the Vice President of Engineering for the Android Platform, and Sameet Samat, President of the Android Ecosystem, about the efforts being made to increase battery life in Android 15. The duo explained that one important way this was being done was through the Doze mode.

For those unfamiliar, Doze mode was first introduced with Android 6.0 Marshmallow as a way to manage background tasks on a smartphone when it was idle. It determines which applications can operate in the background and for how long.

The Android architecture effectively optimizes idle time, allowing numerous background operations to execute concurrently inside a brief maintenance window. This prevents separate apps from running at different periods of time, keeping the device awake for far longer than necessary.

According to the report, Doze mode has been sped up by 50% with Android 15. This means that the device will enter this mode fifty percent faster. By increasing the idle state duration, Android will be able to manage background tasks better. This tweak is believed to add up to three hours of standby battery life to devices.
