Springfield, Oregon: Suspect Killed After Stabbing 2 Officers

Police say officers were attacked while responding to a disorderly subject at a Gateway Street business in Springfield, Oregon.

A violent altercation in Springfield, Oregon ended with a suspect fatally shot by Oregon State Police troopers after allegedly stabbing two Springfield Police Department officers on Wednesday, July 30.

Authorities say the incident began around 2:37 p.m. when officers responded to reports of a “disorderly subject” inside a business on Gateway Street.

Suspect Brandishes Knives, Attacks Officers

According to Springfield Police, the situation escalated quickly when officers made contact with the individual, who “brandished two knives and threatened to fight the officer.”

The suspect then stabbed two officers, causing what were described as “significant injuries,” according to Springfield Police Lt. George Crolly. One officer had called for backup before the attack occurred.

An officer-involved shooting occurred when responding Oregon State Police troopers tried to make an arrest,” Crolly said in a news release. The suspect died at the scene “despite attempts at life-saving measures,” he added.

Scene Secured Near Happy’s Car Wash

The area near Happy’s Car Wash on Gateway Street was quickly cordoned off. Police tape surrounded the scene as law enforcement began their investigation.

Lane County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Sgt. Tim Wallace stated that traffic in the area would remain restricted for several hours.

Eyewitness Describes Chaotic Scene

Samantha Brophy, manager at a nearby Denny’s, described the moment law enforcement arrived:

“It looked like 10 or 15 cops started running across from the hotel into the Happy’s Car Wash over there,” said Brophy. “And then you heard like a ‘pop, pop, pop,’ and I knew it was gunshots of some sort and then a bunch of people were running.”

No Ongoing Threat to Public, Authorities Say

Officials have confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the public at this time.

Under Oregon law, officer-involved shootings are reviewed by an external agency. In this case, the investigation is being handled by the Lane County Sheriff’s Office and the county District Attorney’s Office.
