How Many Israeli Hostages Are Alive in Gaza? Here’s What Trump Said

Trump claims fewer than 20 Israeli hostages are alive, calls situation “extortion” and suggests a military option.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump claimed this week that fewer than 20 Israeli hostages held by Hamas may still be alive, contradicting reports that estimate around 50 captives remain in Gaza.

Speaking during a press conference in the Oval Office, Trump said the actual number might be even lower.

“So now they have 20,” Trump said. “But the 20 is actually probably not 20, because a couple maybe aren’t around any longer. It’s a terrible thing.”

Trump Calls Situation “Extortion,” Suggests Military Option

Trump described the ongoing hostage crisis as “extortion” and insisted it should end quickly. He suggested that a military operation might be safer than continued negotiations.

“I actually think they’re safer in many ways if you went in and you really went in fast,” he said.

His comments come as families of hostages continue to plead for international support and immediate action.

Families Push Back, Demand Action

The Hostages and Missing Families Forum issued a statement responding to Trump’s remarks:

“Mr President, 50 hostages remain in the hands of Hamas in Gaza. For us, each and every one of them is an entire world.”

Israeli Officials Dispute Trump’s Claim

Israeli officials denied any changes in the official figures. Gal Hirsch, Israel’s point man on the hostage issue, reassured families:

“According to Israel’s information, there is no change in the information you have received from us: 20 of the hostages are alive,” Hirsch said in a message cited by the Times of Israel.
