A massive magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck off the coast of Russia today, triggering tsunami warnings in several countries, including parts of the United States. The entire state of Hawaii has been placed under tsunami warnings, leading to chaotic scenes as locals and tourists scramble for safety.

Traffic Chaos as Evacuations Begin

Videos circulating on social media depict traffic gridlock as Hawaii residents attempt to reach higher ground amidst the alerts.

 

“Here’s a few looking west. Insane amount of traffic trying to get to higher ground,” one individual posted alongside a video capturing cars stretching as far as the eye can see.

“Wow… just checked Google Maps and the traffic in Hawaii looks treacherous as evacuations to higher ground are underway from the Tsunami Warning caused by the 8.8 earthquake off the coast of Russia,” another user commented.

Urgent Warnings from Locals

A third user cautioned, “Heavy traffic leaving Downtown Honolulu, Hawaii as tsunami approaches. This is why you SHOULDN’T WAIT until the last minute. Traffic will only worsen! If you’re in an evacuation zone, LEAVE NOW!”

Emergency Traffic Alerts: Guidance from the Hawaii Department of Transportation

The Hawaii Department of Transportation has shared crucial updates via social media, advising people on accessing local areas:

  • Kauai: Avoid Hanalei to allow for evacuations. Wailua Bridge remains open.
  • Oahu: Likelike townbound has been opened; Kolekole Pass is also open for those leaving the Leeward coast. Nanakuli Contraflow has been shut down.
  • Maui: State Highways are preparing for evacuations.
  • Molokai: Kalaupapa Airport personnel are ready to assist evacuations to the lighthouse.
  • Big Island: Hilo Airport has suspended commercial operations to facilitate evacuations from Keaukaha.
  • All Islands: The Coast Guard Captain of the Port has ordered all vessels to follow proper procedures to leave port.
