Google Pushes AI Mode Doodle – Ignoring Publisher Backlash

In a move typifying its AI-first pivot, Google recently adorned its US homepage with an animated Doodle inviting users to “Try AI Mode”. This experimental feature, powered by Gemini 2.0, is being aggressively promoted on the search Doodle and Chrome’s new‑tab page, aiming to shift users toward an AI-driven search experience.

However, beneath the sleek marketing lies a growing chorus of concerns over what this means for publishers, SEO professionals, and the broader internet ecosystem.

The Hidden Downsides of AI Mode

1. Shrinking Referral Traffic for Publishers

The News/Media Alliance, representing major U.S. publishers, has called the rollout “theft,” claiming AI Mode consumes content without attribution or consent, undercutting referral traffic. SimilarWeb reports steep traffic declines – Forbes down 40%, CNN 28%, while The New York Post and WSJ plunged 27% and 17% respectively. Business Insider, HuffPost, and The Washington Post have also experienced 50–55% drops, sparking newsroom cutbacks.

2. “Zero-Click” Searches Drain Web Value

AI Mode often delivers answers directly, with no click-through, what critics call “zero‑click” search. Click-through rates (CTR) for top results have collapsed, from ~7.3% in early 2024 to 2.6% by March 2025. With summaries front-loaded, readers no longer visit the sources.

3. Opaque Analytics & Tracking Gaps

AI Mode clicks bypass traditional referrer metadata, Google Search Console lumps them into generic “web search,” hiding performance data. As Patrick Stox noted, this blind spot means marketers can’t attribute traffic or ROI, undermining budget decisions and analytics accuracy.

4. SEO Ground Rules are Changing

Surveyed SEO pros are uneasy, 45% say they’re “scared out of mind,” while only 15% express optimism. With ranking volatility spiking since late May, the fundamentals of SEO – keyword targeting, link-building, and meta tags ace upheaval. Professionals fear AI is acting as a “black box,” making strategy harder.

5. Content Centralization & Quality Risk

AI Mode’s summaries don’t consistently cite sources, sometimes omitting links entirely or clustering them in less-visible tabs. That hurts content attribution and shrinks visibility for smaller or niche publishers. Critics warn that this consolidates control under Google, reducing diversity and discouraging high-quality content creation.

Balancing Innovation and Integrity

Google argues AI Mode enhances user experience and promotes discoverability; however, publishers and SEO specialists aren’t convinced. Regulatory scrutiny is building; the CMA in the UK is probing Google’s balance of AI features and search fairness. Meanwhile, publishers are exploring measures like Cloudflare’s AI-bot blocks to protect content.

SEO experts recommend:

  • Embracing structured data (schema markup) to signal to AI Mode what content is authoritative.
  • Tracking direct-traffic anomalies, using heatmaps or session recording tools to detect AI referrals.
  • Diversifying traffic, leaning into social platforms, email campaigns, and brand channels. Many are even suggesting switching out from Google and integrating with other search engines.

While AI Mode offers convenience and speed for users, it disrupts the traditional web ecosystem by reducing referral traffic and burying content behind AI-generated summaries. Publishers and SEO professionals face dwindling visibility and opaque user data, forcing a rethink of digital strategies.

As AI Mode expands, stakeholders must strike a balance between innovation, transparency, and fairness, or else we will end up in a world with outdated knowledge. Further, many experts believe that with small publishers out of the game, the internet will turn into an echo chamber where users only get answers from old and outdated data.
