iPhone 18 Pro May Feature Hole-Punch Selfie Camera, Hidden Face ID

iPhone 17 Pro Max is expected to get a smaller Dynamic Island this year.

Apple really loves playing musical chairs with its front-facing hardware, doesn’t it? Dynamic Island, remember the hype? It strutted onto the scene with the iPhone 14 Pro all “Look at me, I’m not that ugly notch anymore,” and, honestly, half of us just side-eyed it anyway.

They tried to sell this pill-shaped cutout with flashy animations and little popups, but, let’s be real, it felt like dressing up a bruise. First, it was a Pro-only thing, then everyone got a taste with iPhone 15. Apple’s not exactly subtle about milking features before passing them down to the peasants, err, regular iPhone users.

Now here comes the latest rumor, straight from Digital Chat Station over on Weibo. Supposedly, the iPhone 18 Pro, we’re talking 2026 here, so don’t hold your breath, will shake things up again. The screens are getting a teensy bit bigger (6.27″ for the regular Pro, 6.86″ for the Pro Max, because size matters, apparently), both rocking LTPO OLED with a 1.5K resolution. Nothing earth-shattering there.

But here’s where it gets spicy: Apple might use this fancy HIAA (Hole-in-Active-Area) tech, so the only thing peeking out at you will be the selfie cam. Face ID and all its wizardry? Buried under the display, like some kind of tech vampire avoiding the sun. Honestly, that’s a pretty slick move if they pull it off. No more awkward black blob eating up your Instagram real estate.

Right now, Dynamic Island is Apple’s way of making lemonade out of the lemons that are their camera cutouts – smushing together a Face ID hole and a selfie cam hole, hiding the mess with a black software bubble that expands and contracts like it’s auditioning for Cirque du Soleil. It’s clever, I guess, but it’s still just a band-aid.

If this HIAA or Hole-in-Active-Area thing is real, and Face ID does its infrared magic from beneath the screen, we’re finally free of the “capsule” era – just a simple dot for the camera and nothing else. Apple could try to fake the old Dynamic Island with software, but, come on, why bother? Unless they want to keep selling you the illusion of premium features, which… yeah, that sounds like Apple.

If this is indeed the implementation that Apple goes ahead with next year for its premium Pro models, it remains to be seen what becomes of Dynamic Island, as the Face ID system (which includes the selfie camera) will only be reduced to a dot. Apple could indeed animate a fake capsule-like blob around it, but it seems unnecessary given that the hardware has shrunk and does not need the cover-up anymore.
