How to Hide Google AI Overviews in Search Results

Google’s artificial intelligence (AI) search result summaries are intended to provide results in a timely manner. Although these are useful for getting a broad overview of search results, they can also provide inaccurate information based on data from unreliable sources.

There are two ways users may remove the results page to display only links that relate to their search query if they choose to return to a more basic version of Google’s search engine that does not display search results.

For faster searches, you might wish to remove Google’s AI overview from your search results. For aesthetic reasons, you might simply not want to see the AI-generated box at the top of the page. You can change your browser’s search bar settings to hide these results if you wish to hide the AI overviews, or you can take a less respectable approach.

How to Hide Google AI Overviews in Search Results by Default

This method doesn’t require additional browser plugins and will allow you to hide AI overviews in all of your search results. This procedure should work with any browser that lets you use a custom search engine, but we tested it on Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge for Windows and Android. We have used Chrome for Windows in the example below.

  • Open Google Chrome.
  • Click on the three-dot menu icon in the top right corner of the screen and select Settings.
  • Click on Search engine > Manage search engines and site search.
  • Look for the Site search section and click the Add button.
  • In the window that pops up, name your custom search engine and paste the following text in the URL field: https://www.google.com/search?q=%s&udm=14
  • Click Save
  • Click on the three-dot menu and select Make Default.
  • Type your search term in the address bar and press the Enter key to see AI overview-free search results.

If you’re using someone else’s device and don’t want to make any changes to the search engine settings, or if you just want to quickly see search results without fiddling with any browser settings, you can simply swear at Google.

  • Open Google Chrome on your smartphone or desktop computer.
  • Type out your search query.
  • Add an expletive to the start of the search query.
  • Press the Enter key to view your search results without any AI overviews.
