Sherrone Moore Saga: Paige Shiver’s Illness Explained

Former Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore has been formally charged in 14A-1 District Court in Ann Arbor with one count of third-degree felony home invasion, several misdemeanors, stalking tied to a domestic relationship, and breaking and entering.

According to the Michigan Criminal Justice Information Center and the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office, he is also expected to face two misdemeanor counts of breaking and entering or entering without breaking.

Moore’s arraignment is set for 1 PM Friday in Pittsfield Township. Prosecutors say the felony home invasion charge carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $2,000 fine, while the misdemeanor stalking charge carries up to one year in jail and a $1,000 fine.

Each misdemeanor breaking and entering charge carries up to 90 days in jail and a $500 fine. Officials note that the Pittsfield Township Department of Public Safety is still investigating, which means additional charges may be added. Authorities emphasized that all charges are allegations and Moore remains presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Background on the Sherrone Moore Case

Moore, 39, was fired by the University of Michigan on Wednesday after an internal investigation found “credible evidence” that he had engaged in an “impermissible” or “inappropriate relationship” with a staff member. Hours after his dismissal, he was arrested in connection with an alleged assault and booked into the Washtenaw County Jail, where he stayed for two nights.

Police said they responded at 4:10 PM to the 3000 block of Ann Arbor-Saline Road for a reported assault—just 33 minutes before the university publicly announced Moore’s termination at 4:43 PM.

University interim president Domenico Grasso described Moore’s alleged actions as “a breach of trust” in a letter to campus members, adding there is “absolutely no tolerance for this conduct” within the institution.

The university began investigating in late October and later brought in an outside firm “to have as much objectivity and independence as possible,” according to a source who spoke with the Detroit Free Press.

Allegations Involving Staff Member Paige Shiver

As rumors spread, The New York Post identified Paige Shiver as the staff member connected to the alleged relationship. University officials did not publicly confirm her identity, but reports indicate she has a long-term medical condition that gained renewed attention amid the unfolding case.

Who Is Paige Shiver? Understanding Her Pompe Disease Diagnosis

Paige Shiver was diagnosed in 2015 with Pompe disease, a rare and progressive muscular disorder that affects about one in 40,000 people. The disease weakens muscles and can severely impact mobility and overall function.

Shiver first experienced intense muscle pain during her marketing internship in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. After medical evaluation, she received her diagnosis. At the time, she wrote on social media, “Every day is a battle.”

Shiver faced daily joint and muscle pain, a common symptom of Pompe disease. In severe cases, the disorder can also affect skeletal muscles and the heart.

Her symptoms became more widespread in January 2015, while she was a junior at Purdue University. But it was during her internship in Louisiana that she realized how serious the condition was, leading her to seek medical help and ultimately receive a formal diagnosis.

Chicago Bears Spotlighted Shiver’s Story in 2016

In 2016, the Chicago Bears featured Shiver’s fight against Pompe disease. The team learned of her condition through her father, Jeff Shiver, a longtime and well-respected NFL scout.

According to the Bears, Paige required regular infusions and suffered intense pain episodes. To manage her symptoms, she consistently ran, cycled, and lifted weights.

“I would go for a run and couldn’t run for more than 5 minutes because my lungs started getting affected,” she said in the Bears’ feature. “It was really hard to catch my breath and my legs felt really heavy, like I could barely lift them up.”
