    NYC Floods: Subways Swamped, Car Submerged on Clearwater Expressway

    New York City faced widespread disruption on Thursday as torrential rain triggered flash floods, leaving key transportation hubs and highways under water. Grand Central and Park Place subway stations were both submerged, and a car was seen drowned on the Clearwater Expressway in Queens.

    Transit Chaos: Subways and Rail Lines Affected

    The flooding severely impacted underground rail service across the city. Train lines connecting Long Island, New York, and New Jersey experienced significant delays and service suspensions. The Q line in Brooklyn was also shut down in both directions between Atlantic Ave–Barclays Center and Kings Highway due to a fallen tree blocking the tracks.

    Flash Flood Watch and Emergency Declarations

    The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a flash flood watch for the entire state of New York as rainstorms battered the East Coast. Some areas, including Long Island, recorded as much as 5 inches of rainfall by Thursday afternoon.

    New York Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency, urging residents to stay alert and follow safety guidelines as weather conditions worsened.

    Mayor Eric Adams: “Move Now”

    New York City Mayor Eric Adams issued an urgent warning to residents in a video message posted to the city’s official X account:

    “Please stay home if you can. Let our crews do their work. Check on your neighbors, and if you live in a basement apartment, move to safety now before flooding gets worse.”

    The mayor emphasized the unpredictability and danger of the ongoing flash floods, urging New Yorkers to prioritize safety.

    Airports Affected Across the Region

    Severe weather grounded flights across all three of New York City’s major airports, delaying both arrivals and departures. Additional flight suspensions were reported in nearby cities, including New Jersey, Philadelphia, Maryland, and Washington, D.C.

    Heavy Rains Slam East Coast

    The flooding in NYC is part of a broader system of heavy rainstorms sweeping the Eastern Seaboard. Emergency services remain on high alert, and residents are advised to monitor updates from local officials.
