Delta Airlines announced that it will discontinue services on the Austin–Midlands route, effective November 9, 2025. This means the Midland International Air and Space Port (MAF) will no longer be serviced by Delta after this date.
Passengers are encouraged to explore alternative airlines for their travel needs on this route. Delta has stated that it remains committed to providing quality service on its other routes throughout the region.
The airline first launched the route in April 2024, operating two to three daily flights between Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and Midland International Airport. After Delta’s exit, Southwest Airlines will remain the only carrier offering flights on this route.
Why Delta Airlines Is Cancelling the Austin–Midlands Route
The decision to drop this service stems primarily from low demand. According to data from the Department of Transportation, the route’s load factor—the percentage of available seats filled with paying passengers—has remained below 60% since the service began.
A report by Rolling Out stated that while Delta has generally performed well financially, the Austin–Midlands route was one of the weaker links in its network. Industry analysts suggest that Delta initially maintained the route to secure gate access at Austin-Bergstrom, despite profitability concerns.
This move aligns with CEO Edward Bastian’s network optimization strategy, focusing on aligning capacity with actual market demand.
Impact on the Midlands and Local Response
The termination of this route is expected to affect passengers traveling between Austin and the Permian Basin region. Local leaders expressed concern over the announcement, emphasizing the importance of air connectivity for the area.
Councilwoman Robin Poole, who represents the City Council on the Airports Department, issued a statement following Delta’s decision:
“While I am disappointed to learn that Delta Airlines will no longer be servicing our airport, it does not diminish our commitment to ensuring Midland International Air & Space Port continues to thrive and meet the needs of our residents and those traveling through the Permian Basin.”
What’s Next for Travelers?
For now, Southwest Airlines remains the sole operator on the Austin–Midlands route. Travelers looking for alternative options may need to plan accordingly, as Delta’s exit could affect flight availability and fares in the coming months.
