Explosion Rips Through Bronx Mitchel Houses Building.

A powerful explosion shook a Bronx building in New York City’s Mitchel Houses on Wednesday morning, tearing a huge hole in the 20-story high-rise. The blast scattered bricks, air conditioners, and debris across Alexander Avenue.

Fortunately, officials confirmed that no injuries were reported despite the dramatic partial collapse.

Mayor Eric Adams: “We Are Extremely Fortunate”

Mayor Eric Adams visited the site shortly after the blast. He confirmed the explosion appeared to be connected to the boiler room’s chimney system.

“This resulted in a partial building collapse. We are extremely fortunate, at this time, we have no loss of life or no injuries,” Adams said.

Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson described the moment as “an all-hands-on-deck situation.”

“Although there is a lot of cleanup, I’m so grateful that no one lost their life, no one is in the hospital, and that is important to be acknowledged,” she added.

Governor Kathy Hochul also praised the swift response of emergency crews and expressed relief that no residents were harmed.

Eyewitness Accounts of the Bronx Explosion

The explosion was reported around 8:10 a.m. Residents described hearing a deafening boom before seeing smoke and falling debris.

One witness recalled: “The building just exploded, and it fell down just like that.”

FDNY Confirms Ventilation Shaft Collapse

Firefighters quickly arrived on the scene with drones, dogs, and heavy machinery to ensure no one was trapped. FDNY Commissioner Robert Tucker confirmed the collapse involved a ventilation shaft connected to the boiler, believed to be the source of the explosion.

Out of caution, apartments F and G in the building were evacuated. While many residents have since returned, gas service across the entire complex has been suspended until safety inspections are completed.

Emergency Response and Resident Support

Multiple agencies, including FDNY, NYCHA, Con Edison, the Department of Buildings, and the Red Cross, responded to the site.

A temporary support center for displaced residents has been set up at the Mitchel Community Center on Alexander Avenue. Crews are expected to demolish the remains of the damaged chimney before restoring heat, hot water, and gas services.

Nearby streets remain closed, creating traffic delays in the Mott Haven area.

About the Mitchel Houses Bronx Building

The Mitchel Houses, built in 1966, are home to over 3,500 residents in more than 1,700 apartments across 10 buildings.

While the collapse could have been a tragedy, officials say the quick evacuation and emergency response prevented potential casualties. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the Bronx building explosion.
