A dramatic incident unfolded when a Boeing 747 aircraft attempting to land in Taiwan had its wing smash into the runway amid Typhoon Podul. Horrifying footage of the crash, showing sparks flying into the air, quickly went viral online.
What Happened During the Typhoon Landing?
According to the Daily Mail, UPS Express cargo flight 5X61 was trying to land in Taipei when it encountered strong typhoon winds. The Boeing 747 required three landing attempts before it finally touched down safely.
The flight had departed from Hong Kong-Chek Lap Kok International Airport (HKG) on August 13, heading to Taipei–Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE).
Footage Captures Shocking Moment
The viral video shows the plane’s wing striking the runway, sending sparks into the air. Despite the terrifying moment, the Boeing 747 managed to taxi safely after the incident.
Injuries and Safety
Officials confirmed that no injuries were reported. The plane completed its rollout without harm to the crew, according to The Sun.
Damage to the Aircraft
The Boeing 747 sustained damage to its nacelle, which houses the engine. The Aviation Safety Network reported:
“UPS flight 5X61, a Boeing 747-8F, suffered an engine pod strike during a night-time landing on runway 05L at Taipei-Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE). At the time of arrival, strong gusting winds with windshear associated with Typhoon Podul were reported at TPE. At 11:20 UTC, the flight aborted the approach to runway 05L and executed a go-around. The aircraft was positioned for another approach, which was also aborted. At 12:08 UTC, the aircraft landed after the third approach and taxied to the apron. Photos after the incident show a cowling had separated from the engine.”
This incident highlights the risks of landing aircraft during extreme weather conditions, but also the effectiveness of pilot training in managing emergency landings.
