Police Confirm Shooting on West Union Street
According to the Ohio University Police Department (OUPD), shots were fired in the area of West Union Street near Depot Street on Thursday. The department issued an alert at 2:28 p.m. local time, confirming a “large police presence” and urging locals to avoid the area.
“There is a huge police presence in the area of West Union and Depot streets, and locals have been asked to avoid the area,” the OUPD alert stated.
Thrift Store Reports Active Shooter, Police Stand-Off
Local business UpCycle Ohio Thrift Store, located on West Union Street, posted on Facebook describing the situation as an active shooter scenario with a stand-off.
“To the best of our knowledge, the stand-off is occurring at Beasly Mills,” the store shared on Facebook.
Situation Contained, Police Confirm
In a follow-up update, the same store reported confirmation from local authorities that the threat was no longer active:
“We have received confirmation from the Athens Police Department that the situation at Beasly Mills has been contained.”
