Amazon to Shut Down Appstore on Android After 14 Years

Amazon Ends Android Appstore, Focuses on Fire Devices.

Amazon is officially shutting down its Appstore on Android devices on August 20, 2025, ending a 14-year journey, according to The Street.

Launched in 2011 as an alternative to Google Play and Apple App Store, Amazon’s Appstore offered apps, games, and in-app purchases. Now, the company is focusing on its own device ecosystem.

Why Amazon Is Closing the Appstore on Android

The Appstore allowed users to download apps, buy games, and make in-app purchases, often using Amazon Coins, a digital currency that provided discounts.

However, after years of falling behind its rivals, Amazon is prioritizing Fire Tablets, Fire TV, and other Amazon devices, where most users already access the Appstore.

Amazon Warns Apps May Stop Working After August 20

Amazon has warned that apps downloaded through its Appstore on Android may stop working properly after support ends.

The company stated: “No Guarantee” apps will work after August 20.

There will also be no future updates for these apps. Users may need to switch to Google Play Store to keep their apps updated.

Amazon Coins Refund After Appstore Shutdown

One standout feature of the Appstore was Amazon Coins, which customers used for buying apps, games, and add-ons at discounted rates.

Amazon has confirmed that any unused Coins will be refunded automatically after August 20, according to Android Central.

Appstore Will Still Work on Amazon Devices

The shutdown only affects non-Amazon Android devices. The Appstore will continue to work on Fire Tablets, Fire TV, and other Amazon devices, which handle the majority of Appstore usage.

A spokesperson explained: “The discontinuation is being undertaken so we can focus on the Appstore experience on our own devices, since that’s where the overwhelming majority of customers engage with the service.”

Amazon Strengthens Its Own Ecosystem

This decision is part of Amazon’s strategy to strengthen its ecosystem. Recently, the company merged Freevee content into Prime Video, shutting down the Freevee app.

Amazon’s Q2 2025 earnings report showed an 11% increase in subscription revenue, hitting $12.2 billion, while product sales rose nearly 10%. By focusing on its own devices and services, Amazon aims to create a tightly integrated platform for customers.
