The death of an airman at F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Wyoming on Sunday, July 20, has compelled the base to impose a ban on the 9mm SIG Sauer M18 handguns. In a recent press release, F.E. Warren Air Force Base confirmed that the airman, assigned to the 90th Security Forces Squadron, “died on base while on duty.”

Details of the Incident

While the news release provided limited information about the incident, reports suggest that it may involve an accidental discharge of the firearm. According to Military.com, the SIG Sauer M18 has faced scrutiny due to multiple incidents of accidental discharges reported among civilians and law enforcement.

The SIG Sauer M18, part of the P320 series, is a compact 9mm pistol adopted as the standard sidearm for all branches of the U.S. military. The U.S. Air Force command has decided to suspend the use of this handgun pending further investigation. The identity of the deceased airman has not yet been disclosed.

Official Statements

“Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with the airman’s family, friends, and his fellow defenders during this incredibly difficult time,” stated Col. Terry Holmes, commander of the 90th Missile Wing at F.E. Warren AFB.

Investigation Underway

Charles Hoffman, a spokesperson for the Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC), discussed the decision to ban the M18 pistols in a statement to Military.com. He emphasized that the AFGSC is currently investigating the SIG Sauer M18s and will maintain the ban until the investigation concludes.

“Out of an abundance of caution and to ensure the safety and security of our personnel, the pause will remain in place pending the completion of comprehensive investigations by the Air Force Office of Special Investigations and the AFGSC Safety office,” Hoffman noted.
