Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, was placed on high alert after police responded to a reported multi-victim shooting near the Barus & Holley engineering buildings on December 13. Authorities confirmed that at least two people suffered gunshot wounds, with more victims feared as the investigation continues.

According to early reports, the suspect—described as wearing a mask—opened fire before fleeing the scene. Police later confirmed that the gunman had been taken into custody. The conditions of the victims have not yet been released.

Residents and visitors were urged to avoid the area as officers secured the scene and searched for additional threats.

The university sent a BrownUAlert warning students, staff and visitors about an active shooter on campus. The urgent alert instructed individuals near Barus & Holley to:

  • Lock their doors
  • Silence their phones
  • Stay hidden until further notice

The alert emphasized the widely adopted “RUN, HIDE, FIGHT” guidance, advising people to evacuate if possible, seek cover if escape is not safe, and only use force as a last resort.

University officials asked the community to continue monitoring updates as police responded.

U.S. Congressman Gabe Amo said on X that he was monitoring the situation closely and remained in communication with law enforcement. He urged anyone in immediate danger to call 911 and advised those in the vicinity to remain indoors and follow police instructions.
