Judge Frank Caprio, the widely loved Rhode Island judge who became a viral sensation for his compassion and fairness, has passed away at the age of 88. Known to many as “the nicest judge in the world” and the star of the Emmy-nominated TV show Caught in Providence, Caprio’s passing has left millions mourning worldwide.

Hours before his death, Caprio shared an emotional video message on Instagram, asking his followers to keep him in their prayers:

“Unfortunately, I’ve had a setback; I’m back in the hospital now, and I’m coming to you again asking you to remember me in your prayers once more,” Caprio said in the video, referring to his ongoing battle with pancreatic cancer.

Family Confirms Peaceful Passing

In an official statement, the Caprio family shared heartfelt words about his life and legacy:

“Judge Frank Caprio passed away peacefully at the age of 88 after a long and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Beloved for his compassion, humility, and unwavering belief in the goodness of people, Judge Caprio touched the lives of millions through his work in the courtroom and beyond. His warmth, humor, and kindness left an indelible mark on all who knew him.”

They added:

“He will be remembered not only as a respected judge, but as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. His legacy lives on in the countless acts of kindness he inspired. In his honor, may we each strive to bring a little more compassion into the world — just as he did every day.”

Frank Caprio’s Cancer Battle

The cause of death was confirmed as pancreatic cancer, a disease he bravely fought for nearly two years. He was diagnosed in November 2023 and revealed the news in an emotional Facebook video.

Despite a grim prognosis, Caprio underwent six months of chemotherapy and five radiation treatments. In May 2024, he celebrated his final radiation session by ringing the “bell of healing” at the Miami Cancer Institute, surrounded by family and cheering medical staff.

A Legacy of Compassion and Kindness

Frank Caprio became a global figure through his viral courtroom videos that showcased empathy, humor, and humanity in justice. His approach to the law made him a beacon of kindness in a world often focused on punishment rather than understanding.
