According to reports, WhatsApp is testing an Imagine shortcut that allows users to create AI-powered photos. The instant messaging service has apparently been experimenting with artificial intelligence (AI) features such as AI-generated profile images and stickers for quite some time. As part of its AI initiatives, Meta launched Meta AI, a chat assistant, across its apps, including WhatsApp, in certain countries in 2023, providing users with conversational skills and image-generation tools.

According to WhatsApp update tracker WABetaInfo, a shortcut to the image-generating feature was discovered in the WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.24.12.4. It apparently allows users to instantly make AI-powered photos utilizing Meta AI within the app.

Notably, Meta AI already has image-generation capabilities, but they are only accessible through text prompts by identifying the AI chatbot with “@Meta AI” in group chats. It is expected that this alleged functionality will allow for quicker image generation for individuals who frequently interact with AI images.

As shown in the screenshot, the attachments option now includes a new quick shortcut named Imagine, which may be used to summon Meta AI’s image creation capabilities. According to the report, it is included in a beta version of WhatsApp.

The report also suggests that it may only be offered to users who already have Meta AI. The chatbot is presently only available in a few countries, including the United States, Australia, Canada, South Africa, and more. According to the source, quick image generation via a shortcut is still being developed and is not yet available to WhatsApp for Android beta testers. It is expected to be introduced to a larger audience in the future.

Meta’s instant messaging platform is also developing an AI-powered Profile Photos feature, which supposedly allows users to create AI profile images. According to the report, users must enter a prompt with a description of the image they want to create on a new page named Create AI Profile Picture. It then apparently creates a personalized photo that matches the specified description. This feature was discovered in the WhatsApp for Android app, version 2.24.11.17.
