Related Incident: Wichita Man Pleads No Contest in Mass Shooting Case

In a separate but related matter, John D. Houze, a 29-year-old Wichita man, has pleaded no contest to a charge of criminal possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. This plea is connected to his involvement in a mass shooting at the now-closed City Nightz nightclub in the city’s Old Town entertainment district.

Houze is set to be sentenced by Sedgwick County District Judge Seth Rundle on September 4. As part of a plea deal, prosecutors have agreed to dismiss several counts of aggravated assault and unlawful discharge of a firearm in exchange for his plea.

Overview of the Nightclub Shooting

The shooting occurred on July 2, 2023, shortly after 1 AM during an after-party for rap artist Timothy ‘Mozzy’ Patterson. Chaos ensued when a fistfight broke out in the club, which was hosting Patterson and his entourage, including armed security personnel.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Houze took cover amid the panic but then fired indiscriminately towards the club’s entrance, amid a crowd of fleeing patrons. Despite his later denial of possessing a firearm during a police interview, security footage captured the events unfolding.

In total, at least nine individuals were injured in the shooting, and two others suffered injuries while trying to escape the scene.

Houze faces charges alongside two other men, Jaylen Thomas, age 23, who is currently serving a 6-year, 10-month prison sentence, and Ameir King-Ingram, age 21, who is serving 4 years, 5 months.
