The US Naval Academy went into lockdown on Friday following reports of an active shooter on campus. Initial reports suggested a former midshipman seeking revenge had returned armed, prompting fear and chaos among students and staff.
Updated statements from Academy officials clarified that no expelled student was involved. Instead, the incident resulted from a false active shooter report, which triggered a campus-wide lockdown.
Incident Details: Midshipman Injured
During the lockdown, a midshipman sheltering in place mistook a law enforcement officer for a threat as officers conducted a sweep of Bancroft Hall, the Academy’s main dormitory. The midshipman struck the officer with a training weapon, prompting officers to open fire.
The student was medevacked near Bancroft Hall and is currently hospitalized in stable condition. Officials confirmed the midshipman is expected to recover.
Campus Response and Security Measures
Two Maryland State Police medevac helicopters assisted with medical evacuations, while law enforcement conducted a room-by-room search to secure the area.
Maryland Governor Wes Moore stated there is “no active threat” and the situation is under control, though the base remains on heightened alert.

The incident reflects a national trend of fake active shooter threats disrupting schools and universities in recent weeks, causing fear and emergency lockdowns. The US Naval Academy continues to review security protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future.
