The U.S. Department of Labor ignited fresh debate over the future of the H-1B visa program after posting on social media that “American jobs are for American workers.”
The remark comes just days after White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said President Donald Trump holds a “nuanced opinion” on the H-1B system, which is undergoing major changes.
Trump Wants U.S. Workers Prioritized, Says Press Secretary
During a recent briefing, Leavitt emphasized that Trump does not support U.S. workers being replaced by foreign labor and is focused on restoring American manufacturing.
“The President does not support American workers being replaced… The President wants to see the American manufacturing industry revitalised better than ever before,” Leavitt said, crediting tariffs and trade deals as part of that effort.
She called Trump’s views on the H-1B visa “nuanced” and grounded in “common sense.”
Leavitt added: “If foreign companies are investing trillions of dollars in the United States… he wants to see that at the beginning to get those manufacturing facilities up and running. But ultimately, the President always wants to see American workers in those jobs.”

Earlier this year, Trump stunned the tech industry by proposing an unprecedented H-1B visa fee hike to $100,000, up to 60 times higher than current costs.

Officials argued that the program had been “abused” to undercut U.S. wages and outsource IT roles.
