The US National Weather Service (NWS) on Sunday issued a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of central Ohio, alerting residents and visitors to strong winds and hail. The warning remains in effect until 5:30 pm local time on Sunday.

Officials reported that wind gusts could reach up to 60mph (97km/h), posing risks to trees, power lines, and buildings. Communities under the alert include Newark, Lancaster, Reynoldsburg, Pickerington, Heath, Granville, Pataskala, Canal Winchester, Baltimore, Buckeye Lake, and surrounding areas.

Areas at Risk

Forecasters noted that southeastern Franklin County and eastern Pickaway County could also be impacted, with gusts of up to 45mph and pea-sized hail possible.

“The storm’s intensity, including penny-sized hail, could cause damage to roofs, siding and trees,” the NWS said.

Safety Tips for Residents and Tourists

The NWS urged people in the affected areas to take the following precautions:

  • Seek shelter indoors: Move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building and stay away from windows.
  • Avoid flooded roads: Torrential rain could cause flash flooding in low-lying areas.
  • Stay informed: Monitor NWS alerts or updates from accommodation providers.
  • Secure outdoor items: Boats, camping gear, and personal belongings should be tied down or moved indoors.
  • Communicate with travel providers: Check with hotels or rental managers about closures or relocations.

The storms in central Ohio follow a series of severe weather events that have recently impacted the US Midwest, prompting heightened warnings and safety measures.
