WhatsApp to Get a Set All Media Uploads to HD Quality: Report

The new setting option appeared in the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.7.17.

WhatsApp for Android is apparently getting a new feature that will make it easier to communicate high-quality photos and videos than it presently is. The new function is claimed to include a setting option that lets users choose whether to send media in HD or normal quality. Once selected, the app will automatically apply that selection to all future media uploads. Notably, WhatsApp has enabled users to pin up to three messages in individual and group chats.

The WhatsApp update tracker WABetaInfo detected the new functionality in the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.7.17 release. The Android beta version started rolling out to testers on Monday via the Google Play Beta Program. The new version apparently allows users to modify the upload quality of videos and photos directly in Settings, avoiding the need to repeat the process with each new media upload.

A new Setting option may be found in the Storage and data menu, as seen in a screenshot from the report. This new menu option is called Media upload quality, and it apparently offers two options: Standard quality and HD quality. When a user selects an option, all subsequent uploads will follow that preference.

In August 2023, the messaging platform released the HD Photo Sharing feature, which was later expanded to include support for high-resolution videos. However, for the moment, users must manually pick whether to share files in HD or normal resolution each time they send photographs or videos.

The granular control proved useful for individuals who typically transfer ordinary files and only sometimes share HD photographs and videos. However, for those who prefer to stick with one of the possibilities, this step is optional.

According to reports, an upcoming WhatsApp update will address this issue. The preview screen option to modify the quality is still supposedly available, but it is now set to the preference selected in the settings.

The feature has been reported for Android, but not confirmed for iOS or desktop apps. It should be noted that none of the current options allow users to send media in its native resolution, particularly for large files. To do so, users must share it as a document.
