WhatsApp started rolling out a new feature to beta testers that may make it easier to track communications received through the app. The reminders feature, which alerts users to missed status updates has been updated with the option to receive message reminders in the app’s most recent beta version for Android. According to a feature tracker, WhatsApp is designed to only notify users about updates and messages from prioritized contacts.

After updating to WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.25.29 (via feature tracker WABetaInfo), the feature description under Settings > Notifications > Reminders has been updated to state that the app will give periodic message reminders in addition to status updates.

Loudfact was unable to access the function even after installing the most recent beta version, indicating that it is gradually becoming available to testers.

When the feature is enabled, users will receive notifications for messages that they may not have noticed on the app. WhatsApp has yet to reveal any details about how the feature works, including whether it will display reminders for unseen messages and status updates for all contacts.

According to the feature tracker, the Reminders feature would notify users of unseen messages from specified contacts, which will be picked based on app interactions. According to reports, the reminders would be based on an algorithm that runs on the user’s phone, thus a new WhatsApp installation will generate a list of contacts with whom the user has recently communicated.

It appears that the feature was designed to send out reminders for select conversations in order to prevent the app from inundating users with status updates and messages from all of their contacts. This feature is likely to be rolled out to more beta testers in the following days, with the possibility of making it available to all WhatsApp users later on.
