WhatsApp May Bring a Secret Code Feature for Locked Chats: Report

WhatsApp is apparently rolling out the secret code feature via the Google Play Beta program, beginning with Android v2.23.21.9 beta.

In May, WhatsApp released Chat Lock functionality, which allows users to lock certain chats using their fingerprint, face lock, or passcode. The Meta-owned instant messaging company is now said to be testing a new secret code feature that will give users even more control over their locked chats.

According to reports, this would allow users to create their password for their encrypted chat folder. The upcoming security feature has been discovered in WhatsApp for Android beta v2.23.21.9, which is available through Google Play Beta.

According to WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo, users will soon be able to select a custom password for their protected chat folder. This secret code feature would provide an additional layer of security for sensitive interactions. Users can access their locked chats by entering the secret code from the app’s search bar. Setting up a secret code will reportedly allow users to lock chats on companion devices as well.

The update is believed to be available through the Google Play Beta program, with the 2.23.21.9 beta for Android. The feature is currently unavailable to testers and will be included in a future app update.

The publication has included a preview of the secret code generating feature, giving users a sneak peek at it. According to the preview, WhatsApp recommends using a word or a simple emoji for rapid access. The secret code may be changed or removed at any time by users.

In May, WhatsApp introduced the Chat Lock function for both Android and iOS users. It enables users to keep their messages and conversations private and safe by encrypting them with a passcode, fingerprint, or face unlock.

This function will move locked chat threads to a new folder in order to protect the privacy of chats, even if the user’s phone is compromised. These chat notifications will not include the sender’s name or a message preview.
