Threads is currently introducing a new Tags functionality to the platform on a global level. The Meta-owned platform debuted earlier this year to compete with Elon Musk’s X.

Meta revealed a few weeks ago that it was experimenting with using tags in Threads posts. This feature, sometimes known as hashtags, has been popular on social media sites for years and is available on a variety of platforms, including Threads’ competitor X, formerly Twitter.

In a Threads post, Instagram Head Adam Mosseri stated that users can now tag a topic in a post. He stated that the feature is being rolled out to all users worldwide. The function is intended to assist users in categorizing their posts, making them easier to find and interact with.

Although the feature is similar to the hashtag feature present on other platforms that have been increasingly popular in recent years, Threads tags have some visible variations as well as a few functional changes.

Mosseri notes that the “#” symbol is not displayed in a Threads tag, that users can tag more than one word even if they are spaced out, and that just one tag can be added per post. According to Mosseri, this approach to tags aims to make conversations more focused on communities and less on “engagement hacking.”

You can use the “#” key on your keyboard or the new # button in the post composer to utilize a tag on Threads. You will be given a list of pre-existing subjects to choose from, or you can create your own. Within a tag, you will be able to utilize spaces between words and include special characters.

Because the “#” symbol is missing from the post, the Tag on a Threads post shows in blue, much like a link. You may follow other talks on the same topic by clicking on the tag. Emojis can also be used as or included in tags, according to an Instagram Product Designer.
