According to a market research organization, global smartphone shipments increased by 5% year on year (YoY) in the third quarter (Q3) of 2024. Samsung maintained its position as the original equipment manufacturer with the largest percentage of units shipped, while Apple and Xiaomi retained their rankings from the previous quarter. However, all three experienced modest declines in market share. According to the report, Vivo ended the quarter on a positive note.

According to a survey by market research firm Canalys, Samsung had an 18% share of smartphone shipments in Q3 2024, allowing it claim the top place. The South Korean technology gaint lost three percent of its market share year on year.

The same is true for Apple, which had a 17 percent market share this quarter, down from 18 percent the previous year. The iPhone manufacturer concluded the quarter with the second most shipments.

According to Canalys, this is Apple’s third-highest quarterly volume to date. Strong demand for the iPhone 15 series and preceding versions contributes to Apple’s total growth. The report highlighted a market move toward premium smartphones, particularly in Apple’s stronghold regions of Europe and North America.

It is predicted that Apple’s most recent smartphone lineup, the iPhone 16 series, may not only aid it to a successful finish in Q4 2024, but also carry the moment into the first half (H1) of 2025.

Meanwhile, Xiaomi and Oppo ranked third and fourth on the list, with 14 and 9% market share, respectively. According to the report, the latter benefited from its good success in the Indian and Latin American markets. Vivo had double-digit shipment growth and rounded up the top five, with a nine percent market share.
