Instagram Reportedly Working on an X-Styled Community Notes

Instagram is said to be working on integrating Community Notes into its platform. According to a tip, the Meta-owned platform is implementing a new feature that allows users to leave a community note on the published posts.

The leaked information comes weeks after Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced discontinuing the existing fact-checking program, citing censorship mistakes and strict content policy. While the parent company has stated that Community Notes will be implemented across all its social media channels, no specific release date has been announced.

According to a Threads post by developer Alessandro Paluzzi (@alex193a), Instagram’s Community Notes feature is currently in development and not available to any users. The feature is apparently at an advanced stage on Threads, while Community Notes is already being tested. Notably, Zuckerberg indicated that the feature will be launched in the United States first, followed by the rest of the regions.

The tipster shared a screenshot showing how to activate the function by tapping on the three vertical dots next to every Instagram post. The option was labeled “Write a Community Note” and placed above the Report icon. Currently, it is unclear how users will be selected for Community Notes or how written notes will be rated.

Meta stated that Community Notes will allow people with diverse perspectives to provide feedback on misleading content and additional context. Eligible users can contribute background information or opinions, and if the community thinks it beneficial, it will be published under the post.

In a series of posts on Thread, Zuckerberg explained his decision to discontinue the fact-checking operation. He said: “It’s time to get back to our roots around free expression and giving people a voice on our platforms.” He also stated that content policies will be simplified, and restrictions on topics like immigration, gender, and others that “are out of touch with mainstream discourse” will be removed.

The Community Notes feature was first developed by X (previously known as Twitter) in 2021, but it was expanded and popularized when Elon Musk acquired the company. Several netizens have criticized the feature for taking power away from independent organizations that seek objective truth and instead placing it in the hands of a small group selected arbitrarily.
