Putin’s India Visit: Key Deals and Takeaways

Russian President Vladimir Putin concluded his two-day state visit to India on Friday after a packed schedule that began and ended at Rashtrapati Bhawan. He received a ceremonial welcome with a tri-services guard of honour in the morning, held extensive talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, attended a business forum, and later was hosted at a state banquet by President Droupadi Murmu.

The visit — Putin’s first to India in four years — reaffirmed the strength of India-Russia ties amid geopolitical turbulence and ongoing Western pressure on New Delhi over its partnership with Moscow.

Below are the key takeaways from Putin’s India visit:

1. Modi Says India Is “Not Neutral” on Ukraine

Ahead of his bilateral meeting with Putin, PM Modi stressed that India supports peace, not neutrality, in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

“We always support peace. We support a peaceful solution to the conflict,” Modi said, adding that dialogue and diplomacy remain India’s preferred path.

Putin thanked Modi for India’s “attention to peace efforts”, noting that the two nations cooperate on military technologies, space development, AI, and several other strategic domains.

2. Leaders Reaffirm Commitment to Dialogue on Ukraine

During the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit, Modi again called for an end to the war through negotiation, while Putin said Moscow is working toward a peaceful resolution.

3. India and Russia Sign New Port & Shipping MoU

On the second day of the visit, both nations signed a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in the port and shipping sector, strengthening connectivity and maritime partnerships.

4. Push to Expand Key Transport Corridors

India and Russia agreed to deepen collaboration on major connectivity projects, including:

  • International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC)
  • Chennai–Vladivostok Eastern Maritime Corridor
  • Northern Sea Route

The focus: building efficient logistics networks and boosting infrastructure capacity.

5. India–Russia Trade to Expand Through 2030

Modi announced that both countries have agreed on an economic cooperation program extending to 2030, aimed at significantly expanding bilateral trade.

“Taking India-Russia economic partnership to new heights is our common priority,” he said.

6. India to Launch Free 30-Day e-Tourist Visas for Russians

In a major tourism push, Modi announced a free 30-day e-tourist visa and a 30-day group tourist visa for Russian citizens.

The announcement aims to revive travel and people-to-people ties post-pandemic.

7. Putin Says Russia Will Continue ‘Uninterrupted’ Oil Supplies to India

Addressing U.S. pressure on India over Russian oil imports, Putin made his stance clear: “Russia is a reliable supplier of oil, gas, coal, and everything required for India’s energy needs… We are ready to continue uninterrupted shipments.”

8. Free Trade Agreement Talks Resume

Modi confirmed that discussions have resumed on a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and the Eurasian Economic Union, with both leaders targeting $100 billion in annual bilateral trade.

9. Putin Pays Tribute at Rajghat

Earlier in the day, Putin visited Rajghat to pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi. He laid a wreath, offered floral tributes, and signed the visitors’ book.

10. Putin Departs After Strengthening India–Russia Partnership

Putin departed for Moscow on Friday night after reaffirming long-standing diplomatic, defence, and energy ties with India — a relationship increasingly under global scrutiny but still central to New Delhi’s strategic calculus.
