Hawaii’s Hanalei Sees 3ft Tsunami Elevation Above Sea Level

The tsunami has begun to impact the state of Hawaii, prompting urgent calls for immediate action to safeguard lives and property.

Wave Activity Raises Concerns

In Hanalei, a sea level gauge recorded tsunami waves reaching an amplitude of 3 feet above the normal sea level, indicating a significant rise in coastal water levels. Authorities are urging residents and visitors to remain vigilant and follow all safety instructions.

Tsunami Alert and Safety Instructions

A tsunami alert issued in Hawaii warns that tsunami waves are now striking the state, urging residents to take immediate action. The warning explains that a tsunami consists of a series of long ocean waves, with each wave crest lasting between 5 to 15 minutes or longer, often causing widespread flooding in coastal regions. This threat is expected to persist for several hours due to ongoing wave activity.

Authorities caution that tsunami waves can effectively wrap around islands, putting all shores at risk regardless of their facing direction. In some cases, the trough of a wave may expose the seafloor temporarily, but the water will rush back in rapidly.

Extremely powerful and unusual currents may also occur near shorelines, creating additional risks. Debris carried by the tsunami can further intensify its destructive impact, especially if a high tide or rough surf coincides.

Coast Guard Orders Evacuations

The U.S. Coast Guard has instructed all commercial ships to vacate Hawaii’s ports and has prohibited any vessels from entering until tsunami advisories are lifted. “All harbors in Hawaii have been closed to incoming vessel traffic. Vessels transiting within the vicinity of the Hawaiian Islands or inbound to ports in Hawaii shall remain offshore until conditions subside,” stated the Coast Guard Oceania District.

As Hawaii faces a serious tsunami threat, residents and visitors are urged to strictly adhere to all safety guidelines and evacuate as necessary. Stay tuned for further updates from local authorities.

Hawaii Closes All Commercial Harbors as Tsunami Reaches 4 Feet in Maui

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) has reported that the tsunami gauge at Kahului in Maui, Hawaii, recorded a peak amplitude of 4 feet above normal sea level. In light of the tsunami threat, the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency (Hawaii EMA) has announced the closure of all commercial harbors across the state as a precautionary measure to ensure public safety.
