An explosion shook Pilestredet in downtown Oslo, likely caused by a thrown hand grenade. Authorities quickly sealed off the area, warning residents to stay clear due to the presence of unexploded ordnance near Parkveien. Emergency teams are responding cautiously to the scene.

Emergency Response and Evacuations

Police and emergency services rushed to the area, shutting down roads while firefighters remained on standby. Several police helicopters have also been deployed. Residents were advised to avoid windows and stay away from the location. Nearby trams were evacuated, causing disruptions across the city’s tram network.

Police Statement on Hand Grenade

Oslo Police operations manager Øyvind Hammervold told TV2: “We are working on the basis of a main theory that a hand grenade was planted.”

A police statement confirmed that explosives remained on-site initially, increasing risks for anyone nearby.

Incident Linked to Wider Security Concerns

The Oslo blast comes after drone sightings over Denmark and Norway the previous day, which disrupted air travel in both countries. Authorities continue to investigate any potential links between the incidents.

Second Grenade Detonated, Suspect Arrested

Police later found two grenades on Pilestredet, with one having exploded. The second grenade was safely detonated by the authorities. A 13-year-old has been arrested in connection with the incident, which prompted emergency alerts for local residents.

Public Safety Advisory

Authorities urge the public to avoid the area until further notice. Emergency teams remain on high alert, ensuring the safety of residents while investigating the cause of the blast.
