iOS 18 Could Be The Biggest Update In The History Of Apple

Apple is expected to announce iOS 18's AI features at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June.

Later this year, Apple will release its new iPhone 16 series, which is believed to include Generative AI technologies. The Cupertino, California-based company’s AI drive has fallen well behind rivals Google and Samsung, with both the Pixel 8 and the newly introduced Galaxy S24 series featuring artificial intelligence-powered features and apps.

The next iPhone will most likely include generative AI technologies as part of iOS 18. According to a recent rumor, Apple’s next significant update to its mobile operating system could be the largest in the company’s history.

According to 9to5Mac, which quotes Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman’s latest Power On newsletter, iOS 18 will most certainly be “one of the biggest iOS updates—if not the biggest—in the company’s history.” iOS 18, codenamed Crystal, is expected to include “ambitious changes,” as well as new AI features.

“I’m told that the new operating system is seen within the company as one of the biggest iOS updates — if not the biggest — in the company’s history. With that knowledge, Apple’s developers conference in June should be pretty exciting,” Gurman reportedly said in his newsletter. Earlier this month, Gurman had reported that Apple would likely announce iOS 18’s AI offerings at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June.

While Apple has been tight-lipped about the generative AI capabilities coming to iOS 18, speculations suggest that Siri, the iPhone’s on-device assistant, is due to receive a substantial AI update. The updated Siri is likely to be powered by Apple’s Large Language Model (LLM).

Other apps, like as Apple Music and Messages, may also receive AI features, such as improved song recommendations, playlist generation, and text suggestions. Gurman stated in October last year that Apple’s office apps, including Pages, Numbers, and Keynote, might also receive AI advancements.

The development of AI features for Apple’s devices is expected to cost over $1 billion over the next year. Gurman stated in November that the iPhone 16 series will not receive big hardware advancements, necessitating iOS 18 to be “extra impressive.”
