Are you unable to follow people on Instagram? It’s a common problem that most people face when Instagram suddenly won’t let them follow people. That problem can vary person to person, while for some it can be a specific person and for others its anyone at all.

1. You Have Reached the Follow Limit
Instagram has currently restrictions on follow limit, the restriction allows you to follow max 7500 people on Instagram. Once you reach the limit of 7500 people, you will have to unfollow some people in order to follow others.
Apart from total restriction, Instagram has daily and hourly limits too. The app gives you an hourly limit of 120 people per hour, however, it is best to not constantly hit this limit as this may impact your account.
Note: Some users also blame third-party apps which follow people in the background. If you have previously given your account access to any 3rd party apps then remove them until you are sure about the app actions.
2. You Have Muted The User
Another reason behind this issue is that you may have accidentally muted that specific person. Instagram won’t inform you if you have muted someone when you visit their profile. So you will have to check your ‘Muted People’ list to see if you’ve accidentally muted them.
To Unmute the users follow the steps below,
- Open Instagram App.
- Go to your Instagram Profile -> Settings
- Scroll down until you find ‘Account’ and tap it.
- Tap the ‘Muted Accounts’ option. If the person that you’re trying to follow shows up on that list, remove them.
- Now you should be able to follow them.
3. Your Account is Restricted
This is another possible reason that can prevent you follow people on Instagram. If Instagram feels that your account has been showing some of the spammy behavior, such as following too many people in a short period of time, then they may restrict you from following more.
This restriction can be for short or long time depending on your account behavior. In the case of short account restriction, the only possible way to fix the issue is to take a break from Instagram for a couple of days and hope that the restriction gets lifted.
If your account is permanently restrcited then there is nothing you can do, however, this case is rare and mainly occurs when someone posts inappropriate content or harass other members.

4. Bug Inside Instagram App
Sometimes the issue lies inside the App. Like any other app, Instagram stores temporary data on your phone which helps to keep you logged in and makes your user experience better.
However, sometimes this data can become corrupted, which leads to bugs such as not able to log in or not being able to follow people. In order to fix this, you need to reset the data by clearing the cache.
In order to fix the issue follow the steps below,
Android Users
- Go to your Settings
- Under Apps select Instagram
- Now select Storage and tap on ‘Clear Cache’
iPhone Users
- Go to your iPhone Settings
- Under General select iPhone Storage
- Scroll down until you find ‘Instagram’
- Tap it and then tap ‘Offload App’
This will reset all the temporary data that Instagram has stored on your device. Now open the Instagram app and log in, you should be able to follow people without an issue.
