Apple Pencil (2023) With USB Type-C Port Launched

On the iPad Pro, the new Apple Pencil (2023) enables Hover mode but lacks pressure sensitivity and the double-tap option to change tools.

The Apple Pencil (2023) was introduced recently as a more cheap alternative to the company’s second-generation Apple Pencil device. The new stylus has a matte finish and a flat edge that can be magnetically attached to the side of the 10th-generation iPad, as well as previous iPad models with a USB Type-C port, including the iPad Pro, iPad Air, and iPad mini. It lacks wireless charging capabilities and a few advanced features featured on the more expensive Apple Pencil (2nd generation).

Meanwhile, users who own an iPad (2022) or another model with a USB Type-C port will no longer need to buy a USB Type-C to Apple Pencil adapter, which is required to use the first-generation Apple Pencil with iPad models that support the modern USB connector.

Apple Pencil (2023) Specifications

The newly released Apple Pencil has a USB Type-C port hidden beneath a sliding mechanism at the top of the pen. While it has a flat edge that can be used to magnetically link it to the side of recent iPad models with flat edges, it cannot be charged wirelessly like the Apple Pencil (2nd generation) and must still be paired using a cable.

Unlike the first-generation Apple Pencil, the new stylus supports the Apple Pencil hover mode, which is available on the more expensive second-generation Apple Pencil but not its predecessor. The Apple Pencil (2023) does not, however, support the pressure sensitivity function found on both the first and second-generation Apple Pencil models.

The Apple Pencil (2023) lacks some of the capabilities present on the second-generation Apple Pencil due to its cheaper pricing. This includes pressure sensitivity and the ability to change tools by double tapping. Similarly, unlike the Apple Pencil (2nd generation), you will not be able to get a free engraving on the Apple Pencil (2023).

The iPad Air (2020) and subsequent devices, the iPad mini (2021), the 11-inch and 12-inch iPad Pro (2018) and newer models, and the iPad (2022) are all compatible with the Apple Pencil (2023). According to Apple, the stylus measures 155×7.5mm and weighs 20.5g, and it enables Bluetooth and wired connectivity via the integrated USB Type-C port.
